Self Coaching for better Transaction Analysis

Transaction Analysis is an approach that was developed by Eric Berne. As with all 'talk therapies', its roots are in the field of mental health. However, today, this approach is being used across fields, from schools to workplaces.

Transaction Analysis has one basic theory. This is, that in any situation where there are two or more people ivolved, each person relates to another person in one of three ways.

1. The Parent to the Child
2.The Adult to the Adult
3. The Child to the Parent

Hence transaction analysis looks at unhappy or unsatisfactory transactions and analyzes just the transaction and not the entire personality, to bring a quick solution to problems Transaction Analysis is an approach that was developed by Eric Berne. As with all 'talk therapies', its roots are in the field of mental health. However, today, this approach is being used across all fields, from schools to workplaces.

Transaction Analysis has one basic theory. This is, that in any situation where there are two or more people involved, each person relates to another person in one of three ways.

The Adult to the Adult transaction indicates that there is an objective appraisal of reality. The goal of Transaction Analysis is to strengthen these kinds of transactions as they are deemed to be the most practical.

The child to the parent transaction also has two traits- adaptive or free, each having its positive and negative aspect.

Hence, transaction analysis looks at unhappy or unsatisfactory transactions and analayzis just the transaction and not th entire personality to bring a quick solution to problems.

Unsatisfactory transactions arise when people do not respond in the same form of transaction that was begun by the first speaker. This may mean theat the speaker began in a Adult to an Adult transaction while the responder responded in a child to parent form. This is called a 'crossed transaction'.

The other kinds of transactions are 'Reciprocal transactions' and 'covert transactions'.

Self - coaching in Transaction analysis means always being aware of 3 factors

i. The kind of stuation that exists
ii. The kind of transaction most suitable to such a situation
iii. Solutions in the case of crossed transactions.

One can use a variety of previous discussions that may have occurred to practice transaction analysis. Think about the type of transaction both in terms of the speakers and the transactions between them.

You could also define roles for my self, your self and the other's self and role play an ideal transaction.

Transaction analysis requires the individual to be constantly aware of the kind of transactions occurring around them, whether there is a myself component to it, i.e they are personally involved in it, or there is a your self and a other's self component to it, i.e it is occurring between two other people.
